Older children and immunity

Older children have faced unique challenges since March 2020, and several research teams are focusing on how these challenges may affect immunity for this age group. A survey that researchers conducted in Canada and published in the  International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity  analyzed the changes in movement and play behaviors in children immediately following the COVID-19 outbreak. The results showed that only 4.8% of children and 0.6% of youths were meeting the combined movement behavior guidelines during this time. Both children and youths had lower physical activity levels, spent less outside time, had higher leisure screen time, and got more sleep overall during the survey period. The researchers note that healthy movement behaviors positively contribute to both the physical and mental health of young people, including the development of stronger immune systems. Therefore, these initial findings present some cause for concern. The authors ...

Has the coronavirus pandemic changed someone's life for ever?

Yes  , Corona has changed the life of every individual human beings in this planet from rich to poor , from powerful humans to weaker human beings . “When we talk about death corona doesn’t discriminate between human beings . COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives globally?

One of the words that defined 2020 is pandemic - it literally means "affecting everyone". Coronavirus has changed all aspects of our lives, and it has led to surprising discoveries. Faced with a pending lockdown people started to buy in bulk, with one of the most cherished items being toilet paper. Technology We also discovered what it means to be stuck at home, with computer screens being our only way of contact - homeschooling, home office, working out and staying in touch with loved ones via zoom. The most vulnerable People in elderly homes were particularly isolated. At the beginning visits were not allowed. Eventually though innovative solutions were found. Hospital staff A moment to come together was also the lockdown tradition to clap each evening for the medical staff, who worked relentlessly at the frontline of the healthcare crisis. The Mask Masks used to be an attire reserved for medial staff. They were the only ones who needed it - that was the message from the ...

How has your life changed due to the coronavirus? What were your future plans that got postponed due to it?

The virus has affected almost everyone in one or the other way. Some lost their job, some graduated on Zoom call, and some others married on WhatsApp. For me, the daily routine is almost the same, as I am a freelance writer and I work from home most days. But there were things that I had planned… So right before lockdown, I was planning a trip. First to Udaipur, then to Uttarakhand. I didn’t really check where I would stay and all, but I wanted to leave my hometown and didn’t feel like going back to the new place I rented in Ahmedabad. So a night before I go down with fever and thus was saved from being locked out of home, I sat with my parents and told them this; “I can’t settle. Not at one place. You might find my decisions rash but Papa, had it been you at my place, you’d have done the same. I know I got this attitude from you.” And though Ma was torn visibly, she seemed to be happy with my decision of living on my terms. The next morning, waking up to leave home at 6:00 AM, I...

How has COVID-19 affected your daily life?

What a year last and now for 2021. A lot of changes and protesting stands out to me over the news despite the restrictions with the Covid pandemic! I think the uncertainty for people, that sense of not exactly knowing how tomorrow is going to pan out plan wise that feeds an unrest and the more uncertainty we feel, the greater the stress and anxiety. So much has happened that has turned life upside down in ways none of us could have imagined. And now the new strain of Covid some refer to as the U.K strain this time, is seeping over like a unbearable wet blanket on a cold American winters day. I like to keep up with news related information so as to try and make good health decisions with the pandemic for both myself and those in the community around me but I think its the not knowing exactly how this horrid thing will show anytime, anyplace that remains a concern. I mean, we can wear the appropriate face masks, utilize all the sanitizing stations if we have to go out for necessiti...

what changes covid has brought in our lives [HAS CORONA CHANGED OUR LIVE FOREVER]

Globally, year 2020  came carrying with it the most dreadful  corona virus ! As the  pandemic situations  was not known for the mass population, initially it brought the  unknown fears and uncertainty of future,  thereby maintaining extra precautionary measures to fight it,  especially Delhi(my abode)  being on one of the  topmost affected cities . But the awareness towards the disease made the situation for me not so troublesome, as I was anticipating earlier. When I look back at the earlier months, the situation has made  positive changes  in our lifestyle. We learnt to live  happy and peaceful life in least resources to o. No morning walks, no outings, no shopping, no get together, no helpers, no maids, during the lockdown period,  but each and every member of my family shared the overall responsibility so well, especially  taking care of the elderly person(my 90 years old father-in-law) . Life went on its o...

The psychological effects of isolation on immunity

Having explored the physical aspects of immunity, we now turn our focus to the psychological effects. Although adults and older children can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their immune systems will remember how to fight off microbes, there is another piece of this puzzle to consider: stress. Researchers Fulvio D’Acquisto and Alice Hamilton, who published a review in the journal  Cardiovascular Research Trusted Source , note that while physical distancing “minimizes the spread of COVID-19, such social isolation has the potential to affect the cardiovascular and immune systems.” They point to previous animal studies that researchers conducted in socially isolated mice, primates, and other species. They write: “Of note, high levels of inflammation are a driver for [cardiovascular disease]. Social isolation was linked to downregulation of type I and II interferons and an impaired response to infection by simian immunodeficiency virus.” They note that in the wake of social...

Hand sanitizer: Friend or foe?

What about all the hand washing and sanitizing? Will these behaviors affect the immune responses of young people? Prof. Bloomfield and colleagues suggest that they will not. “The idea that we could create ‘sterile’ homes through excessive cleanliness is implausible; as fast as microbes are removed, they are replaced, via dust and air from the outdoor environment, […] commensal microbes shed from the human body and our pets, and contaminated foods brought into the homes.” They note that changes in lifestyle and environment, including dietary changes and increased antibiotic use, as well as accelerated urbanization have all led to changes in our microbe exposure. This has likely contributed to the increase in allergic conditions such as eczema, hay fever, and food allergies. However, the authors also note that “the public idea that obsessive hygiene and cleanliness is the root cause of the rise in allergies is no longer supported.” Prof. Bloomfield and colleagues conclude their stu...

Children and the ‘hygiene hypothesis’

Many parents and caregivers will be familiar with the so-called   hygiene hypothesis , even if they do not know it by name. It is essentially the idea that there is a link between the rise in allergic conditions and reduced exposure to microbes during childhood resulting from hygiene measures, such as frequent hand washing, introduced to protect children from infection. Dr. David Strachan first proposed this link in an article that appeared in the  BMJ Trusted Source  in 1989. In a paper that appeared in the journal  Perspectives in Public Health  in 2016, Prof. Sally F. Bloomfield and colleagues examine Dr. Strachan’s original paper. They write: “The immune system is a learning device, and at birth it resembles a computer with hardware and software but few data. Additional data must be supplied during the first year of life, through contact with microorganisms from other humans and the natural environment.” They continue: “If these inputs are inadequate ...
